Gurudwara Sahib Kangar, Perlis

GURDWARA SAHIB KANGAR, PERLIS

No. 78 Jalan Jubli Emas, Kampung Wan Abdullah, 01000 Kangar, Perlis

In the early 1940s, there were a few Sikhs residing in Kangar. Sardar Jagat Singh took the lead in collecting donations and bought a shophouse on the main road, Jalan Kangar. This shophouse was converted into the Gurdwara Sahib.

The families of the late Sardar Jagat Singh and the late Sardar Bhagwan Singh donated the present Gurdwara Sahib land, which is approximately 1/2 an acre in size. Funds were raised from the Sangat from all over Malaysia to construct the new double storey Gurdwara Sahib building. Sardar Jarnail Singh laid the foundation stone in 1969. The cost of the new building amounted to RM100,000.00 out of which RM35,000.00 was donated by the Government.

The Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) of the State of Perlis, the late Tan Sri Datuk Sheikh Ahmad, officially declared the new Gurdwara Sahib Kangar open on 15th December 1970. The ground floor consists of the langgar hall and the kitchen while the Granthi's quarters are located at the back. There are also two rooms to accommodate Sikh visitors. The first floor consists of the Darbar Sahib. In 2002, this Gurdwara Sahib was repaired and renovated at a cost of approximately RM50,000.00.

The Management Committee comprises of the President, Secretary, Treasurer and five committee members. The present Trustees are Sardar Swaran Singh and Sardar Kultar Singh.
There is an Assistant Registrar of Marriages in this Gurdwara Sahib who officiates at Sikh marriages when called upon to do so. The actual marriage ceremony is conducted by the Granthi in accordance with Sikh religious rites.

There are presently about 30 families who participate in the religious activities in this Gurdwara Sahib. There are 15 students who study Gurmukhi everyday in this Gurdwara Sahib. The weekly prayers are held on Sunday mornings from 9.30a.m. to 11.00a.m. The Isteri Satsang programmes are held on Wednesday evenings from 5.00p.m. to 7.00p.m.
