Gateway to Sikhism proudly launches  Gurudwaras of World @ www.worldgurudwaras.com on auspicious day of Khalsa Sajna Divas , Vaisakhi April 14th 2012.  Worldgurudwaras.com  will strive to be most comprehensive directory of Historical Gurudwaras and Non Historical Gurudwaras around the world.

The etymology of the term 'gurdwara' is from the words 'Gur (ਗੁਰ)' (a reference to the Sikh Gurus) and 'Dwara (ਦੁਆਰਾ)' (gateway in Gurmukhi), together meaning 'the gateway through which the Guru could be reached'. Thereafter, all Sikh places of worship came to be known as gurdwaras.

It is  a work in progress and  We strongly urge the Sikh Cyber Community to contribute to this  project by submitting  contact information, details, images  of Gurudwaras around the  world to make this a comprehensive directory.

Cuisine of Punjab:Spicy Basmati Rice

Spicy Basmati Rice


(serves 5-6)

  • 2 cups Basmati rice
  • 3 tbs. Vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3 fresh, hot green chillies, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1/2 tbs. Garam masala
  • 3 cups water or vegetable stock

Wash the rice in several changes of water. Drain. Soak in cold water for 20 minutes. Drain. In a heavy-bottomed pan, heat three tablespoons of vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the onions and sauté until lightly browned. Add the rice green chillies, garlic, ginger, garam masala and cook for two to three minutes, until all the grains of rice have been coated. Now pour in the water or stock, bring rice to a boil. Cover with a lid and simmer gently for 15 to 20 minutes or until all moisture is absorbed and rice is cooked.
